Pet Acupuncture Consultation

Pet acupuncture is a holistic treatment option that we provide at Home to Halo Veterinary Hospice for a variety of ailments. From ancient times, acupuncture has been used to reduce pain, enhance circulation, and accelerate healing. The benefits of acupuncture can help our pets feel better and improve their quality of life.

What does acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture can help treat many different symptoms or conditions. Examples of conditions that can include acupuncture as part of the treatment plan include, but not limited to: arthritis, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), tendon or ligament injury, seizures, cancer symptoms, and endocrine disease (thyroid, diabetes, etc). Sessions can help with symptoms such as pain, nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and constipation, etc. Dr. Hogan will evaluate your pet’s condition and see if your pet is a good candidate for acupuncture treatment.
What to expect in an in-home acupuncture session?

Once the appointment is scheduled, Dr. Hogan will come to your home where your pet can relax and be comfortable. The appointment begins with going over your pet’s medical history, any concerns you have, and . Initial appointments last about 45 minutes with follow-up sessions that last around 30 minutes.

Acupuncture sessions can be performed in your pet’s favorite spot and you can offer them their favorite treats. Once they are comfortable, Dr. Hogan will place tiny sterile needles in specific locations tailored to your pet’s condition. The needles stimulate nerve endings, the release of endorphins and trigger points to relieve pain. This process improves circulation and reduces inflammation in the body.

What are the side effects of acupuncture?
There are very few side effects. The most common is sleepiness after the treatment.
How long are treatments, and how often should pets get acupuncture?
Individual treatment times vary but can range from 5 to 25 minutes. Typically, we start with one session a week for the first 3-4 weeks. Depending on the condition treated and your pet’s progress, we may decrease the frequency of the treatments to weekly or biweekly.
